Bottlenose Dolphins 2/24/25
I’d say “are you tired of dolphin photos yet?”, but I’m not sure that’s even possible. My friend Chris gave me a call alerting me that he spotted some dolphins at Ft Funston again. Funston has been a pretty good place to see them recently. I threw my gear in the car and headed there straightaway. There were a lot more dolphins than previous days. There were definitely at least 8 because I saw that many at one time (in 3 different groups). I’d venture a guess the actual number was in the 10-12 range. They didn’t linger as long as they did the previous day, but they were a lot more active. I didn’t actually realize how active they really were until I saw Chris’ photos from before I got there. Boy did he get some great action shots!
We followed them for a bit as they headed north. When we ran out of cliff, and the dolphins were out of range from that position, Chris said he had to head home. I decided to go to the north beach access to see if I could catch them there for a bit, and also hoping they might do what they did the previous day and turn around. I did manage to catch up to them at the beach access, though there were only a few of them there - the rest had gone well north of the range I could reasonably get photos. One of them hung around for a little while longer and then headed north to join the rest.
I’m able to ID 4 of them: the 3 we saw yesterday (Elppin, Ojii and Spice) as well as Sakura (I’ve photographed her on several other occasions). As for the rest …. I’ve sent these photos plus a pile more to The Marine Mammal Center - we’ll see what they’re able to do.
