Orion Nebula 2/9/25

As I mentioned in my earlier Running Man Nebula post, as I was reviewing that photo I was reminded of how spectacular the Orion Nebula is. Last night I decided to take another shot at Orion. Orion was the first deep space object I ever photographed. I made a second attempt a few years later, with more experience and an upgrade in equipment. It’s now been almost 4 years since my last Orion shot, so I wanted to see if a few more years of experience helped.

Unfortunately I didn’t get as many photographs of Orion as I had planned because I fell asleep in the middle of taking the photos. And that was right when Orion was in the best position for me to photograph. But I had gotten at least a reasonable number of photos before that, and it’s not looking like we’re going to have decent astrophotography weather again for at least a few more days, so I decided to just try processing what I managed to take. Similar to my Running Man photo, Orion came out better than I expected, all things considered (including the fact that the moon was still closer to my target than I would like).

The Orion Nebula will always hold a special place for me. Not only is it visually stunning, but it was the first deep space object I photographed, and the first time I realized that such a thing was even possible. To me it’s almost magical.
