Pinky’s One Whale Show 9/24/24

What a great way to be welcomed back home! I flew back from PA last night and this morning I was moving pretty slowly, and working on my first cup of coffee when I looked out and saw a whale lunging near the pier. I debated for a bit whether to try and go out - not only was I tired, but I'd have to unpack all my camera gear and my clothes and get dressed - I was thinking by the time I did all that and got out there, the whale would be gone. But how can you say "no" when you've been away from the whales for a whole week?

I got out on the pier and fortunately the whale was still around. After the first lunge, I looked at the photo and thought "I'm about 80% sure that's Pinky". Pinky is a whale our Pacifica Whalespotting group “adopted” and named. After a couple more small lunges, mostly facing the "wrong way", I started to take out my phone and was going to send a Facebook update saying "I'm about 80% sure Pinky is at the pier but I need a better angle or a fluke to be sure". Before I could get the phone out of my pocket, the whale lunged again and I managed to get my hands back on the camera fast enough to get a shot. After that shot, I was 99% sure it was Pinky. Another 15 minutes or so later she threw up her fluke for me and that sealed it - 100% certain it was Pinky.

She hung around the pier area for several hours. She was lunging, she was lounging around at the surface, she put up her tail a few times and was generally putting on a really nice show for me. Thank you Pinky! Awesome welcome home!

I had a hard time narrowing down the photos. I have about 10 more I really was tempted to post, but I'm trying to be more selective. It's not easy.
