Savvy Sea Lion 2/21/25

I was out on the pier for the first time in a long time and was greeted by a few fishermen who said as much. I wasn’t really looking for anything in particular, though was hoping for a possible Gray Whale or Bottlenose Dolphin sighting. No such luck, but it was still a nice day out on the pier. This little rascal had things figured out. He was hanging out right next to the pier, closely watching all of the fishermen. As soon as one would cast, he would quickly dive down, find the trap and take the bait out. The fishermen were none-too-pleased and were trying to outsmart the Sea Lion, but he was pretty crafty and seemed pretty adept at tracking the traps and absconding with the treats. The setting sun was lighting up his face really well so I couldn’t resist taking a few photos. Getting good Sea Lion eye shots are really difficult - they seem to have a near infinite capacity to soak up all light, leaving just a dark, seemingly vacant spot. But the sun did a beautiful job lighting up those Brown Eyed Beauties.
