American Kestrel 12/14/24

After the morning’s thunder and lightning, then tornado warning I was mostly planning on staying inside and working on photos because the winds were still kicking up into the 50mph range. Then I reminded myself that often after a good storm you can find interesting photo opportunities so grabbed my camera and headed out. I was rewarded with a very active Kestrel at Mori Pt. I swear this guy must have gotten flying lessons from a swallow. He was making full use of the strong winds, darting all over, moving very fast. Sometimes he’d stop and “kite” for a bit, and seemingly as soon as I got my camera pointed at him he’d suddenly shoot off in some direction. I don’t often see Kestrels at Mori Pt, so I found a spot where I could spin around in all directions and tried to track this little fighter jet.
I was a little perplexed as I was going through some of the photos. He apparently picked up a small rock, carried it around with him for a while and then just dropped it (photo4). Not sure what that was all about.
