Bottlenose Dolphins at the Pier 3/25/25
It was a beautiful day by the ocean, so I decided to head out to the pier to see if any Gray Whales or Bottlenose Dolphins wandered by. It took a while, but eventually some dolphins showed up. They didn’t hang around very long, they were only in photo range for just shy of 4 minutes, and that’s with my long lens. But I managed to get a few good shots during that brief encounter. I was actually a little happy it was so brief. I have a massive backlog of dolphin photos I need to sort and process. I was figuring that with such a brief period, I could just do these shots for now and work on the rest of my backlog later. And then the Gray Whale showed up and I followed it to Mussel Rock, at which point the dolphins returned, which led to several thousand more photos getting added to the backlog. Sigh. I decided to stick with my original plan and start by just doing the shots from the pier. I’ll eventually get to the rest of the photos.
I recognized several of them, but I can only ID two of them off the top of my head without doing some photo comparisons. Sakura and her calf were among the dolphins. Those two are in Photo1 and the calf is in Photo2. Then the two of them appear again in Photo5. I’ll be sending these plus a bunch more to The Marine Mammal Center for cataloging.
