Otter vs Geese Pt Reyes 4/16/24
These shots have been languishing on my laptop for almost a year now, partly due to my large backlog and also because I was struggling with which shots to choose and how to present them. Today I decided it was finally time to make some decisions and do something with them.
I already posted some of the shots of the River Otter here: https://www.chamberlinnature.com/blog/river-otter-pt-reyes-041624 and now here is the sequence where it charged at some Canada Geese. The otter originally was just rolling in the sand, enjoying itself and then he quickly entered the water and seemed to be on a mission. It wasn’t clear to me at first what he was doing until he launched out of the water right at a pair of Canada Geese. I wouldn’t have expected the otter to go after the Geese, as they seemed a bit too large for him. But a little bit of research afterward indicates they do indeed occasionally go after and can kill geese. But these geese were having none of that. One goose ran away into the water while the other stood its ground and gave the otter an earful. Once the goose in the water had a little distance, it turned and gave the otter an earful too. The otter sized up the situation and decided he was more comfortable in the water so launched back in the water. At that point both geese took to the air and as quickly as the action had started, it came to a close.
